Playwright and Hybrid Collagist Pamela Enz discusses her new play AFTERWARDS, premiering Friday, September 11 at NYC’s La MaMa Theater. Joining her in this conversation is the play’s director, Danny Rocco. AFTERWARDS explores love, memory, forgiveness, and the enduring impact of grief, and it serves as a sequel to Enz’s earlier work, City Girls and Desperados.
Enz has spent 32+ years building an interdisciplinary practice across theater, film, performance, and visual art. Her work has played everywhere from IRT Theater and Dixon Place to the Cork International Film Festival, and her collaborators include Austin Pendleton and Julie Atlas Muz. She’s also Artistic Director of Bad Rep, where her Salon Series has been colliding opera singers, poets, saxophonists, and visual artists in the same room since the Soho days.
Danny Rocco is an internationally produced playwright and pioneer of the Script Writing Score. Rocco’s writing has been developed and produced in New York, Los Angeles, Cape Cod, Colorado, Romania, at the Williamstown Theatre Festival, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and the Irondale Theater Center.
Enz and Rocco also discuss Ève Laroche-Joubert, who worked on the play’s scenic design and movement. Laroche-Joubert is a multidisciplinary artist who creates, engineers, sculpts, and performs her own work. She designs and hand-builds large biomorphic sculptures and kinetic structures that serve as sculptural environments for her and for professional dancers to explore movement and balance. Moving fluidly between sculpture, performance, drawing, design, and photography, her practice explores the body-mind continuum, which she conceives as a unified organism, through the perspectives of neuroscience, the humanities, and philosophy.
